I've been on this website a lot lately getting food storage ideas and also emergency preparedness ideas. (foodstoragemadeeasy.net)
One of the things that they have available is what they call an Emergency Binder, which has several things that go along with it like 72-hour food kit, car kit, contact info etc. Even if you don't have a lot of food storage built up, you should at least put together your 72-hour emergency kits just in case something happens and you need to evacuate quickly.
Here is the link where you can print out the entire excel file where it gives you all these different help sheets.

I've put my kits into backpacks so we can easily grab them and run quickly. Also, think about getting all your car kit into a backpack, so it's in one place and ready. They really have some great ideas on preparedness and just getting started seems like the hardest part. Try building up your supply little by little, but get started. You never know when you'll need these items.
YOu can also sign up for their babysteps checklists that they email to you.
